About Edit

A diffuser is an attachment for a blowdryer that lessens the turbulence of the airflow. This means it doesn't move curls around as much and prevents frizz and flyaways. It is a must have for blowdrying curly hair.

Pixiecurling Edit

So named after a user named pixiecurl, this method is now widely used by CurlTalk participants to blow dry their hair with minimum frizz. These are the original instructions by the user pixiecurl:

  • "Here's the method I've found for maximizing curls/volume and minimizing frizz: Flip hair upside down and put hair from front middle section (closest to forehead in the bowl of the diffuser, and hold bowl all the way against scalp so it is "scrunching" your curls for you. THEN I turn the dryer on, pressing the cool shot whenever it gets too hot for my scalp. I then TURN IT OFF before removing the bowl from my scalp. then I go to the front right section and repeat, then front left, then flip right side up and get the underside, then flip back upside down and get anywhere i missed. I don't diffuse until 100% dry, and it doesn't look quite right until it's finished airdrying all the way and I flip upside down and scrunch again. The key is only having the blowdryer on when the bowl is against your scalp because this minimizes your hair getting blown around and thus minimizes frizz."

Thanks to Healthy Curls for that quote!

General Diffusing Steps Edit

  1. Apply your main styling products to wet hair.
  2. Turn the diffuser on and make sure it is plugged in. :)
  3. Turn the speed setting to low, and the heat setting to whichever you prefer. It is generally acknowledged that it is healthier to use the less warm temperatures, but a good way to dry the hair faster is to turn up the heat.
  4. Bend your head over sideways or upside down and begin diffusing. If you have a bowl diffuser you can use the method described above, but if you don't just move the diffuser in and out of the curls, being as gentle as possible and trying to cover all the hair equally.
  5. Diffuse until your hair is about 70-80% dry. Anything past this point will cause frizz, so just let your hair air dry for the rest of the time. You may want to use a spray gel or other light product to tame any frizzies at this point.
